You have a new crystal and wonder, “Does it need clearing and cleansing?” Well, my answer is, “It depends!”
When you first get a crystal, take a few things into account:
- Where did it come from? If you are comfortable with the gifter or seller, you may not need to clear or cleanse it. I have a few crystal dealers for whom I never feel the need to clean a crystal first. But if I get it from a stranger, I usually clear and cleanse it.
- How does it feel to you? First, sit with yourself and see how your energy is. Do you feel calm? If so, take the crystal in your hand for a few moments and check in again. If you still feel comfortable, you may not need to clear or cleanse the crystal.
- How has my energy, the energy of the world, or the energy of my space been lately? If you, the world, or your space has been wonky, you may want to clear and cleanse your crystals.
- How long has it been since you’ve cleared or cleansed your crystals? Clearing and cleansing is relatively easy, so if you can’t remember the last time, maybe it is time! Also, it is nice to visit with your crystals, so taking some time out to do this is a win-win!
Why would I want to cleanse or clear my crystals?
Crystals can come pre-programmed and you may or may not want that program. Most crystals don’t come pre-programmed, yet you may want the crystal simply for its lovely energy not for what someone else thought it should do. Often clients ask me to program a crystal for them although it is easy to do it yourself. Hmmm, I sense a great subject for my upcoming Crystal Class!
Crystals pick up outside energy. That is why it is so easy to program a crystal. Maybe your crystal source is all about the money and doesn’t care about the energy of the crystals. That is unlikely but it happens and you want to be sure your crystal didn’t bring any of its energy home. Maybe you don’t know where or with whom your crystal has been hanging out! Or maybe the person who had the crystal last has an energy that is just not in alignment with yours! All these are reasons to clean and clear your crystal.
So, how do I cleanse and clear my crystals?
Again, I say, “It depends!” Different crystals like to be cleansed in different ways. The best thing to do is ask the person you buy it from what the best way to clean your new crystal is. This blog is too short to go into who likes what, but just for example Fluorite doesn’t like direct sunlight, Malachite, Turquoise, and many others don’t like to get wet.
Before you use any of the five options I suggest below, check with a crystal book or online to make sure the cleansing process is okay for your crystal. If in doubt, a crystal lady I know and respect, Shelly Norris*, told me her simple way to clear and cleanse a crystal: “I hold them and speak sweet nothings to them… tell them I’m so happy to have them and all kinds of sweetness. They are very happy when I do this and they release anything that doesn’t belong. Pretty fun!” *Shelly’s Facebook info is at the end of this article.
5 Ways to Clean your Crystal
So, here are five tried and true ways to Clear and Cleanse Your Crystals. The top three are the safest if you are unsure if your crystal likes sun, water or salt.
- Moonlight: Put the crystals on a windowsill or outside where the moonlight shines. Some people feel it is best to do this on the three nights of the Full Moon, some on the new moon, some use the phase depending on what they want the crystal to do and some don’t worry about what phase the moon is in. Hint: New to Full moon promotes growth and Full to New Moon helps with finishing up and endings.
- Incense: Sage is the number one clearing incense yet I prefer Nag Champa. The process is simple. While intending that the crystal be cleared and cleansed of anything that is not for your highest and most loving good, wave the crystal through the smoke and imagine all that is being cleared and cleansed be sent to the light for transformation.
- Light Work: This is my favorite and the easiest. I imagine Golden Light (you could use White Light) wash over the crystal as I set my intention as I did with the incense option.
- Sea Salt: You can do this wet or dry, yet be sure your crystals like sea salt. Kosher salt is the same as sea salt and less expensive. Yet, salt can be rough and corrosive, so don’t use on “soft” or “delicate” crystals. To use dry, simply pour salt in a bowl and bury the crystals in the salt. I like to still use option 1 and put the bowl in the moonlight. If using salt wet, pour water, I prefer distilled, in a bowl and add sea salt to taste. Yes, the water should taste salty. Then swish the crystals around in the saltwater while setting your intention. You can leave them in the moonlight or just wash them off after a bit. Be sure to wash them off after as the salt can be corrosive.
- Cold Water: My second favorite way to clear and cleanse a crystal is to run it under really cold water while, again, setting my intention that the crystal is cleared and cleansed in a way that is for my highest and most loving good. I imagine anything being cleared goes down the drain and Mother Earth clears the energy. Washing also cleans off the dust and crystals like that! Remember, not all crystals like to get wet! I have damaged a number of malachite beads this way!
The Importance of your Headspace
With any of these processes, before you start make sure you are in a sacred head space. If you are stressed or hurried, your crystals will pick up on your energy instead of getting cleansed. I always start with a prayer but you don’t have to pray first if that isn’t your thing. No matter which option you choose, somehow ask or intend that the crystal be cleared and cleansed of anything that is not for your highest and most loving good. When you are done, imagine all that has been cleared and cleansed be sent to the light for transformation Remember, you don’t have to do all your crystals at once. This is an opportunity for a joyous connection with your beautiful crystal babies, not a chore!
